Devil and Miss Prym

The Devil and Miss Prym is a novel by Paulo Coelho about good versus evil, and the power of choice. The Devil arrives in a small village and makes a deal with the villagers: he will give them a million dollars if they stone a young woman named Miss Prym to death. The villagers initially refuse, but are eventually tempted by the money and agree to the deal. They stone Miss Prym to death, but soon realize that they have made a mistake. They have sold their souls to the Devil and are no longer content. The novel ends with a message of hope: even though the villagers have made a mistake, they can still be redeemed.
