The King’s Shopping is a children’s book by June Crebbin, illustrated by Warwick Johnson Cadwell. It is one of three stories in the Walker Stories series, which are based on the nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence.”
In The King’s Shopping, the king decides to go shopping in the market. He brings his queen and his maid with him. The king buys all sorts of wonderful things, including a blackbird baked in a pie, a ring for the queen, a new dress for the maid, and a pair of shoes for himself.
On the way home, the blackbird flies out of the pie and sings a song. The queen loses her ring in the market. The maid tears her dress on a bramble bush. And the king’s shoes are too big for him.
But the king doesn’t mind. He’s happy to be with his queen and his maid, even if they don’t have all the things they wanted.
The King’s Shopping is a charming and humorous story about the importance of family and friendship. It is also a reminder that the best things in life are often free.
